Amitriptyline is a type of tricyclic antidepressants. Amitriptyline works with chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression. Amitriptyline relieves the symptoms of depression for example the feelings of sadness, worthlessness, guilt, thoughts of death or suicide, and the loss of interest in daily activities. Amitriptyline also manages the changes in appetite, tiredness, sleeping too much and also insomnia. Amitriptyline can also sometimes be used to treat certain types of pain.
