Lipitor blocks the production of cholesterol in the body. Lipitor inhibits an enzyme HMG CoA reductase which is involved in the bodies production of cholesterol. Lipitor is can reduce the amounts of LDL cholesterol, overall total cholesterol, triglycerides (another type of fat), and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in blood. Lipitor is also used to increase the level of HDL (good) cholesterol in your blood. Lipitor as a result reduces the risk of hardening of the arteries and thereby reduce heart attacks, stroke, and artery disease.
